Business Development in Papua New Guinea

The Chamber has a special relationship with its PNG counterpart, the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce and Industry and renewed a five year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in September 2010 which facilitates either members accessing the services of the other Chamber.

With the support of Austrade Townsville and Port Moresby, members of the Chamber’s Executive visited Port Moresby in June 2010 to explore the feasibility of a trade mission for Townsville Chamber members.

PNG is developing at rapid pace. Significant projects like the Liquefied Natural Gas project, will inject billions in capital investments by 2015.  The country’s economy is changing, eventually doubling its GDP and making it more attractive for Australia to export.

The country is growing its technology and service industries to support its massive infrastructure development.  Townsville businesses are well placed to benefit from those opportunities.  Our civil construction expertise, along with our knowledge in waste and water management, storage and transport logistics, health and education, food services and leisure industry are in great demand.

Following this initial trip, the Chamber visited PNG in August and September 2010 and again in June 2011.  During each trip, local members learned the ins and outs of export to PNG and met with potential PNG partners.  Six local member organisations have developed commercial ties with PNG since their visit.

The Chamber  contributed to a Townsville Enterprise report on business opportunities in PNG,published in July 2011- Opportunities for North Queensland business within the PNG market.
