CBD Redevelopment

The Chamber has been a long time supporter of a revitalised Townsville’s CBD to provide the city with a viable commercial heart.  When Townsville City Council secured funding in 2009 to redevelop Flinders Street, Stokes Street and Flinders Street East, the Chamber decided to play an active role in the redevelopment.  Aside from participating in various strategic committees, like the CBD Taskforce and the Flinders Street Redevelopment Advisory Committee, the Chamber employs an advocate dedicated to supporting CBD businesses impacted by construction activities.

The Development Executive provides an information service to CBD stakeholders, where they can access information on construction progress as well as report issues that impact on their business.

The Chamber, through its Development Executive, has successfully lobbied Council to reduce the levy placed on CBD properties.  It worked in partnership with Rotary Markets to re-introduce Cotters Markets to Flinders Street to maximise the benefits for retailers and stall holders.

The Chamber, in partnership with Council, is conducting a promotion campaign “the New Flinders Street: Come and Experience the Change”, aimed at promoting the CBD and its businesses.  It conducted a successful series of events over the Christmas trading period, thanks to a sponsorship from Watpac Civil and Mining, the redevelopment’s contractor.

The Chamber’s project will continue until the completion of the construction, scheduled for June 2011.
