Townsville Chamber Update

2 November, 2018, Posted By Townsville Chamber

It has been over a month since our last update.  Here is what has kept us busy.

We met with Townsville MP Scott Stewart and discussed NQ Stadium progress; water; and electricity.  While discussing education for employment outcomes, we asked for more details on the make up of the unemployed in Townsville.

We met separately with Federal Member for Kennedy, Bob Katter, Federal Member for Dawson, George Christensen, and Queensland Senator the Hon. Ian Macdonald.  We discussed water; Hell’s Gate and Big Rocks Weir; electricity prices and the need for competition in the north; Defence procurement and progress on the Australian-Singapore Defence Training Initiative.

We attended functions on the occasion of the visit of the Australian-Singapore Chamber of Commerce in early October.

We were there at Chamber members’ forums – NAB Community Discussion; Suncorp Disaster preparedness round table; JCU Public Transport presentation; and Townsville Enterprise AGM.

We also attended forums on the Museum on Under Water Art; Queensland Government Skills for Queensland; Workforce Townsville; Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland.

We continued with our engagement activities, bringing together small round tables of Gold members in October and November.

On 23 November, we will invite members who have joined us over the past few months, to come and meet Board members and receive further information about our organisation.

Besides Coffees and other group gatherings, I have met with 10 members individually over the past 4 weeks. Word on the ground is that while business conditions remain challenging, there is an emerging sense of direction.  Expect conditions to keep changing in 2019.

The Chamber Project Committee (CPC) held a joint event with JCU on the occasion of Business Professionals Week to meet students and give tips on starting a career.

We’ve joined with the Townsville Bulletin on a free event for members to get to know their local journalists.  Join us at Rydges Southbank on Thursday 15 November from 5pm.

We are holding our Annual General Meeting on 6 December from 3pm at The Ville.  Members will be called to elect two new Board members.

Also on Thursday 6 December,  nine local business networks are joining for one big networking event at the Townsville Yacht Club, a way for all of us to say thanks to our members.

We’re now taking to Instagram!!  While we have a good presence on LinkedIn and Facebook, Instagram is our next engagement tool.  We invite members to post their stories.
Call us to find out how!
