We are pleased that restrictions on capacity are beginning to ease and that our advocacy since July has had an impact, but given the opportunity we can do more. We can help decision makers to ensure the roll out of changes is smooth for business operators and to reduce confusion, ensure clarity in direction and enable business owners to maximise the outcomes for their business without spending hours they don’t have applying for changes to their COVID safe plan. The new plan now defines indoor and outdoor areas in venues, while some sectors are still waiting for clear definitions for these areas and how it impacts them, so once again businesses are forced to implement new plans they don’t fully understand and explain them to their customers.
We are starting to see a level of fatigue in the community towards restrictions and we need to see a plan, businesses need a plan. The last Roadmap to easing of Queensland Restrictions was updated on the 28th of August and it clearly states that an ‘Ongoing Review’ of the state-based restrictions will be undertaken based on the levels of community transmission. This includes, – Density requirements, including consideration of moving from 4 to 2 square meters per person for all venues.
According to covidlive.com.au, as of today South Australia has gone 168 days, Tasmania 146 days and Western Australia 173 days without an unknown case of community transmission, the Northern Territory has never had an unknown case of community transmission, and all of these states have the 1 person in 2 sqm rule in place. Queensland is currently at 73 days without an unknown case of community transmission and still we are not following the roadmap set down for Queensland.
We are clearly all in this together but it is hard to be told you can only trade at 25% to 50% of your capacity with no hope in sight.
As the Townsville Chamber of Commerce we are in close contact with our members across a range of industries and we see the issues they face daily. We urge both side of politics to look at these current restrictions and start to provide a clear plan moving forward.
We are here to help and more than willing to accommodate and facilitate meetings between industry and policy makers to insure we can all work through this pandemic as smoothly as possible.
We need a plan to get back to business
