I am truly honoured and humbled to be elected the 67th President of Townsville Chamber of Commerce at our 139th Annual General Meeting last night. In 2021, the WAY we do our work may have evolved, but the WHY, the foundations, remain the same – Advocating, Connecting and Informing businesses.
The COVID years have been strange for everyone, and like many of you, Chamber – as a small Townsville business – had to pivot. Events and networking were not possible, and significant focus was placed on the importance of advocacy work, with the ever-evolving COVID situation at times changing daily.
I would like to thank Michele Falconieri for his commitment to Chamber. The sheer volume of time and energy he has committed over the last two years might have been the most intense asking of any Chamber President in recent history, yet he selflessly volunteered. Often late home to his family, he sacrificed his precious time, all on top of the demands of his day job as a partner at wilson/ ryan/grose
It’s one thing to advocate for change, and it’s another to identify when opportunities arise. But it’s an entirely different and exceptional thing to take the massive action required to capitalise upon opportunities. The work Michele and Ross have done over the last two years to keep the Chamber operating as a small business and assist all three levels of government in handling the pandemic has been phenomenal. They advocated for easing restrictions, staged alert levels, explanations and definitions, all to give businesses and our member’s CERTAINTY.
Opportunity will be the theme during my tenure. I will measure our successes against the opportunities we make and those we embrace for our region. As a city, Townsville must look at the unique opportunities presented to our region as restrictions ease.
I look forward to continuing the work of Chamber Presidents before me, maximising opportunities for our region, and showcasing what we have to offer. Finally, I would like to congratulate Micheal Thorsen from XRX Business Centre Townsville
for being elected as Deputy President and to thank our volunteer board in advance for their support and contribution to our region.
