ROSS: Are you missing out?

26 November, 2021, Posted By TVL Chamber

This year, with the support of many business leaders, we have created the Townsville ChamberCast. I have had the pleasure of interviewing several industry experts on a range of issues and opportunities for our region.

With events a casualty of COVID last year, we started to look at different ways to engage with our members and the wider business community.  With the Australian and Queensland Governments’ support through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, we were able to set the wheels in motion and start our Go Local ChamberCast podcast series.  It now has a loyal following, with listeners tuning in from across Australia and the world to hear about what is happening in our region.

We wanted to retain the core Chamber objectives to inform, connect and be somewhere that businesses could be heard and hear about interesting things that matter to businesses in our region.  We have interviewed experts on some hot topics like the $10m Reinsurance Pool, migration trends, housing trends, the Federal Budget, as well as interviewing local businesses, from a funeral home to hospitality, about the challenges they face.

It has been an excellent vehicle to discuss opportunities for our region. For example, we have spoken to the Defence Hub’s Amy Lever and the major contractor for the Australia-Singapore Military Training Initiative, and Reef HQ about their redevelopment and Edu-Tourism opportunities. We have also heard from the President of Rugby Australia about how impressed they were as an organisation about what we have on offer here.  We have been able to cover complex topics in a way that is easy to digest, and we were recently joined by our co-authors of the Townsville Economic review to discuss our findings.

With our most recent ChamberCasts, we have continued the discussions that began during our Go Local Chamber on Tap events. First, JCU Marketing Lecturer Natasha Buttler spoke at our first Go Local Chamber on Tap event about the six stages of purchasing and why people in business need to understand what motivates a purchase. Then, AEC Group’s Senior Economist Jonathan Pavetto spoke at our most recent event about the circular economy and the impact of buying local. Some of the figures highlighted by Jonathan at the event and in our interview that identified how our city could benefit and look from using locally based professional services were phenomenal.

If we all take the time to review our purchasing decision-making process and focus on sourcing more service providers locally, we will see a significant impact on our local economy.

This week we have added two new episodes.
