On Sunday we witnessed the Australian Cricket team win the 2021-2022 Ashes series 4 nil with the final test concluding after just 4 days. The Ashes have a great history and officially started after England’s first defeat on home soil at the Oval on the 29th of August 1882. As the loss was of great shock to the English at the time, the Sporting Times printed two obituaries, one on the 31st of August and the second and more famous on the 2nd of September 1882. The second famously read
which died at the Oval
29 August 1882,
deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing
friends and acquaintances
N.B. – The body will be cremated and the
ashes taken to Australia.
While this was seen with great humour at the time, it indeed started one of the most prized trophies in World Cricket. For all you non cricket followers out there you might be wondering, why is the Townsville Chamber of Commerce talking about The Ashes? Well, that’s a great question.
The Townsville Chamber of Commerce is very proud of its history. As some of you are aware the Townsville Chamber also started in 1882 and was chaired by our first ever president, the Hon W.V. Brown. This makes Townsville Chamber 140 years old this year and that is something to be very proud of.
Throughout the year, the Chamber will be hosting our signature events like coffees and the golf day, but also putting the spotlight on a very impressive legacy and carrying the 140th year celebration through several major events.
2022 hasn’t started the way a lot of us had hoped but if history is anything to go by, the bad times will be replaced by good times and hopefully that is exactly what will happen this year.
