If the 2019 Floods taught us anything, it was about the power of coming together.
Many Townsville businesses are still struggling to pick up the pieces, and in an effort to do so, they’re focussed mostly inwards. Networking seems like something that they ‘should’ do, but just don’t have the time or the energy right now (or the right mindset).
My word for 2020 is Connection…which is something I can’t achieve on my own. So, I’m hoping you’ll ‘come with’.
Why show up
The time to build a network is always before you need one.
~Douglas Conant, CEO Campbells Soup~
…I’m thinking the next best time would be right now.
Most who are new to networking start off with a ‘what do I get out of it’ mindset – the lack of any instant leads or sales means it’s not long before they find excuses to not show. Those who stick with it, show up with a curious mindset and a willingness to share their knowledge and contacts soon discover (as if by magic) that they have the information they need to take the next step in their business or they’re now knocking on the right doors!
Where to show up
Townsville has amazing networking opportunities for business to grow their circle. Here’s where other businesses are hanging out:
Townsville Chamber Coffee (FREE, and open to all)
Beers Down Friday (FREE and open to all – buy your own drinks)
BNI (7 chapters in Townsville, paid membership, networking & referrals)
Townsville Small Business Network (MeetUp Group – 218 members)
Green Apple Entrepreneurs (MeetUp Group lead by social marketing gurus Mitra and Filitsa – do yourself a favour and get to know these ladies)
There are of course others that are specific to industry and professional peer organisations – but if I’ve missed any please feel free to leave a comment with the details of your get-togethers and if I can help spread the word I will.
**Special mention to Black Coffee Indigenous Business Network, Townsville Businesswomen’s Circle, Business in Heels, Professional Singles Network and Professional Social Network who all host brilliant events regularly throughout the year.
How to show up
With a hand full of business cards, an open mind and a willingness to ‘give’ rather than take.
I know that networking is not everyone’s bag – and I have stood at many a networking event feeling awkward, invisible or that I was completely wasting my time. It’s about being in the right headspace, getting comfortable introducing yourself (coherently) to new people and having a pitch-perfect (natural) answer to the question ‘what do you do?’.
Connect with Confidence – How to Network and ENJOY it!
I’ve taken my ‘Connection’ journey one step further – helping others get comfortable and get their networking game on. If you’re interested, you can find out more here.
The more business people we have out there connecting confidently, the better every networking event will be, the better the outcomes for all. Let’s get connected Townsville!
