Cash is King Bill 2026
Posted: 29 October 2026
The coalition government has introduced a new proposed bill to parliament this week in relation to more businesses having to accept cash as legal tender.
Businesses are still absorbing recent changes around workplace laws, compliance requirements and credit card surcharge reforms. While consumer choice is important, governments also need to consider the cumulative effect of continual legislative change. Every new requirement brings additional costs, training and administration for employers. For Townsville businesses, the discussion isn't just about cash. It's about banking costs, security risks, crime prevention and the practical realities of operating a business. Holding more cash on-site may improve consumer choice, but it can also increase risk and cost for businesses already facing significant challenges.
Being able to pay using cash during times of natural disaster is imperative and Chamber supports consumers having a choice over how to pay. It will be interesting to see if the bill is supported more widely in Canberra.
