Protecting Townsville’s access to working holiday makers

Townsville Chamber is raising concerns about proposed changes to Australia’s Working Holiday Maker visa program, including shortening visas from 12 months to six months and removing access to second and third year visas. While no final decision has been announced, these changes could worsen workforce shortages across Townsville’s hospitality, tourism and agriculture that rely on working holiday makers.

Chamber President Kevin Booth spoke with 7NEWS and ABC North Queensland to ensure the concerns of our members and local businesses were heard. The Chamber is calling for genuine consultation and careful consideration of the impact any changes would have on regional communities before a decision is made. Chamber Members, FGH Group also contributed to the conversation. With four venues in Townsville, accessibility to working holiday visa makers is an integral part of their business. Working holiday makers are an important part of Townsville’s workforce and economy. We will continue advocating for visa settings that support local businesses, regional growth and a reliable workforce.
